“Every child deserves to know there is a path – and to be afforded the tools to get on that path”

On Monday, June 11, 2018, 15 new Sheriff’s Scholars were honored at a dinner held at the Hall of Justice. These exceptional youths were selected out of over two thousand possible recipients throughout Los Angeles County.

The new Sheriff’s Scholars were each awarded a $2,000.00 scholarship (through a generous donation to the Sheriff’s Youth Foundation) to be used towards their education expenses. The Sheriff’s Scholars were nominated by Deputy Personnel assigned to either a Youth Activities League program or Explorer program site, with final selections made by the Sheriff’s Youth Foundation based on GPA, leadership qualities, volunteer hours, and the overall content of their character.

The youths chosen were two students from East Los Angeles Station, one student from Century, one student from Compton, two students from Walnut, two students from Lancaster, one student from Norwalk, one student from Temple, one student from South Los Angeles, three students from Santa Clarita, and one student from Marina Del Rey.

In attendance were Sheriff Jim McDonnell, Chief Warren Asmus, and Captains from each of the recipient stations, representatives from the Sheriff’s Youth Foundation who organized the event, families, friends and of course the mentor deputies that work day in and day out to support area youths. Each of the scholars were able to say a few words to thank the most influential people in their lives which invariably included their families, and the deputies that have guided them in the right direction.

The Youth Activities League, and Sheriff Explorer’s programs are building a great foundation for our future leaders. We are proud to guide and support the youth of Los Angeles County. Congratulations to all The New Sheriff Scholars!

The Sheriff’s Youth Foundation of Los Angeles County (a 501C3) is an extraordinary partnership between the Sheriff Department – and the Sheriff’s Youth Foundation. Under the mentorship of Sheriff Deputies at 17 Youth Academies throughout Los Angeles County, the Youth Academies provide a safe haven; teaching, counseling, coaching and giving guidance in academics, life skills, sports and the arts – while, in many cases, serving as a neighbor ‘town center’ for its families.
