#LASD Century Station partnered with California Highway Patrol and hosted a Free Car Seat Safety Event

Great presentation from California Highway Patrol at Will Rogers Elementary School in Los Angeles today! Current laws regarding the use of car seats were explained, and informational pamphlets were passed out to the families in attendance. Century Station Deputy Gonzalez, Lieutenant Del Real and Captain Carter fund raised through local businesses to be able to donate car seats to have raffled off at the event.

Some important laws to remember:

-Children under 2 years of age shall ride in a rear-facing car seat unless the child weighs 40 or more pounds OR is 40 or more inches tall. The child shall be secured in a manner that complies with the height and weight limits specified by the manufacturer of the car seat. (California Vehicle Code Section 27360.)

-Children who are 8 years of age OR have reached 4’9” in height may be secured by a booster seat, but at a minimum must be secured by a safety belt. (California Vehicle Code Section 27363.)

-Do not add after market items/accessories to your car seat. Always buy items that come directly from the manufacturer of that car seat

-The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration recommends that car sets be replaced following a moderate or severe crash in order to ensure a continued high level or crash protection for child passengers.

The California Highway Patrol also offers assistance with the installation of your child passenger restraint system at any of the their offices by appointment only. Go to www.chp.ca.gov or 1-800-835-5247 for more information regarding their Programs and Services.
