LASD Education Based Incarceration Unit (EBI) hosted one of its largest graduation and certificate ceremonies within Men’s Central Jail.

On Friday November 1, 2018, LASD Education Based Incarceration Unit (EBI) hosted one of its largest graduation and certificate ceremonies within Men’s Central Jail. The graduation was a collaboration of MCJ, CRDF, and TTCF facilities. The graduating class and certificate recipients consisted of 48 male inmates, 10 female inmates and one transgender inmate.

Each graduate was allowed one visitor to enter Men’s Central Jail, in order to watch their loved ones graduate.
Prior to the graduation, visitors and all in attendance had the opportunity to view some of the art work inmates completed throughout the school year. The pieces were displayed throughout the MCJ chapel and received numerous compliments from attendees.

In attendance were EBI’s Captain Hugo Macias, Men’s Central Jail’s operation’s staff, Commander Johnson, Chief Guyovich, and Chief Sharp. Five Keys Charter School, New Opportunities Charter School, EBI staff from all the southern jail facilities (Men’s Central Jail, Twin Towers and Century Regional Detention Facility) and LASD executives, were also in attendance to celebrate all the inmate’s accomplishments.

Captain Macias delivered the opening remarks, which set the tone for the successful event. The Keynote Speaker was New Opportunities Charter School instructor Carlos Sanchez. He delivered inspiring words and examples of perseverance from some of his students.

We would also like to extend our thanks to LASD’s Transportation Services Bureau. The 10 female graduates had to be bused from CRDF to MCJ. They were transported safely and in a timely manner.

The visitors and LASD staff members watched these graduates walk to Pomp and Circumstance, as they were handed their high school diploma or certificate of accomplishment. After the ceremony there was lively applause as they moved their tassels from right to left when they graduated.
This was not only a proud moment for the graduates and their loved ones, but it was also a proud moment for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
