Annual 999 for kids holiday event is a huge success.

Sheriff’s deputies may be tough, but when it comes to helping kids, most have a soft side. That is especially true when it comes to the 999 for Kids program — its name a reference to the “officer needs help” 999 radio code — through which LASD personnel have responded in force to the call to help children for nearly three decades now. This program helps about 1000 children per year by providing equipment and servicesto "special needs" children. This year's event hosted at "STARS" Center training facility in Whittier had a winter wonderland area and many activities for youth to participate in. Out going Sheriff Jim McDonnell and the incoming Sheriff- Elect Alex Villanueva both made appearances at this meaningful event. Undoubtedly, the LASD team was able to put smiles on a lot of youth.
