Sheriff Alex Villanueva, and LASDHQ participate in Read Across America Day.

In honor of Read Across America Day, Sheriff Villanueva and many other members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department met with hundreds of elementary school to share in the joy of reading.

“Green Eggs and Ham” and “Hop on Pop” were two of the Dr. Suess classics the Sheriff read from to an enthusiastic group of first and fifth grade students at Magee Academy of Arts and Sciences an elementary school in Pico Rivera.

Without a cell phone in site, this scene was replicated throughout Los Angeles County as deputies in tan and green were eagerly handed books by elementary students excited for the deputies to read to them.

The LASD would like to thank participating school districts for the opportunity introduce themselves and read childhood favorites to the County’s next generation. Being able to highlight the importance of reading helps all of us create a brighter future. Read Across America was created by the National Education Association in 1997. It is held on the school day closest to March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss.
